Preparation

  1. 1.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. 2.
In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, cumin powder, coriander powder, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, salt, black pepper, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, cloves powder, breadcrumbs, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and green bell pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. 3.
Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into rectangular strips, approximately 10cm (4 inches) wide.
  4. 4.
Take a portion of the sausage mixture and shape it into a long log, about 2cm (0.8 inches) in diameter. Place the sausage log onto one end of a pastry strip and roll it up tightly, sealing the edges.
  5. 5.
Repeat the process with the remaining sausage mixture and pastry strips.
  6. 6.
Place the sausage rolls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  7. 7.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  8. 8.
Remove from the oven and let the sausage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ground meat — Use lean ground beef or goat meat for a healthier option. Make sure the meat is well-seasoned and mixed with the spices for maximum flavor.
  • Puff pastry — Thaw the puff pastry according to the package instructions before using. If you prefer a lighter option, you can use phyllo dough instead.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sausage mixture.
  • Serve the sausage rolls with a tangy tomato chutney or a spicy dipping sauce for added flavor.
  • If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of chili powder in the sausage mixture.
  • Make sure to seal the edges of the pastry tightly to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
  • These sausage rolls can be prepared in advance and frozen. Simply bake them from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
