Preparation

  1. 1.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. 2.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. 3.
In a separate small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in the boiling water.
  4. 4.
Add the warm water, vegetable oil, and the dissolved baking soda mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix well until a dough forms.
  5. 5.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  6. 6.
Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a thin rope.
  7. 7.
Join the ends of each rope to form a ring shape and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. 8.
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Drop the rings into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove them with a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
  9. 9.
Sprinkle the rings with poppy seeds or sesame seeds if desired.
  10. 10.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the Sushki turn golden brown.
  11. 11.
Remove from the oven and let them cool completely before serving.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Flour — Use all-purpose flour for the best results. Avoid using self-rising flour as it may affect the texture of the Sushki.
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds — These are optional toppings that add extra flavor and visual appeal to the Sushki. Feel free to omit them if desired.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a sweeter version, you can add a touch of vanilla extract or sprinkle the Sushki with powdered sugar after baking.
  • To achieve a consistent ring shape, make sure to join the ends of each dough rope securely.
  • Experiment with different toppings such as cinnamon sugar or grated coconut for a unique twist.

Serving advice

Serve the Sushki alongside a cup of hot tea or coffee. They are best enjoyed when slightly softened by dipping them into the beverage.

Presentation advice

Arrange the Sushki on a decorative plate or in a bowl, showcasing their golden brown color and ring shape. Consider adding a sprig of fresh mint or a dusting of powdered sugar for an elegant touch.
