Preparation

  1. 1.
In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, flour, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  2. 2.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
  3. 3.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Gradually add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. 4.
Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. 5.
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the pudding cool for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. 6.
In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  7. 7.
In a serving dish, layer half of the vanilla wafers, followed by half of the sliced bananas, and half of the pudding. Repeat the layers.
  8. 8.
Top the final layer of pudding with the whipped cream, spreading it evenly.
  9. 9.
Crush a few vanilla wafers and sprinkle them on top for garnish.
  10. 10.
Refrigerate the Homestyle Banana Delight for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Bananas — Choose ripe bananas with a few brown spots for the best flavor and texture.
  • Vanilla wafers — If you can't find vanilla wafers, you can substitute them with shortbread cookies or graham crackers for a slightly different taste.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a twist, try adding a layer of sliced strawberries or crushed pineapple between the layers of pudding and bananas.
  • To prevent the bananas from browning, you can toss them in a little lemon juice before layering them in the dessert.
  • For a more indulgent version, drizzle caramel sauce over each layer of pudding.

Serving advice

Serve the Homestyle Banana Delight chilled for the best taste and texture. It can be enjoyed as a standalone dessert or paired with a cup of hot coffee or tea.
