Preparation

  1. 1.
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. 3.
Add the egg, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt to the butter mixture. Mix well.
  4. 4.
Gradually add the flour and yeast mixture to the bowl, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
  5. 5.
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for 1 hour in a warm place until it doubles in size.
  6. 6.
Preheat your stroopwafel iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  7. 7.
Take small portions of the dough and roll them into balls. Place a ball of dough onto the preheated stroopwafel iron and close it, pressing the dough to create the waffle pattern. Cook for about 2 minutes until golden brown.
  8. 8.
Remove the waffle from the iron and immediately slice it in half horizontally. Spread a generous amount of caramel sauce on one half and sandwich it with the other half. Repeat with the remaining dough and caramel sauce.
  9. 9.
Allow the stroopwafels to cool completely before serving to allow the caramel to set.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Butter — Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature for easier creaming with the sugars.
  • Caramel sauce — You can use store-bought caramel sauce or make your own by heating sugar and cream together until thickened.

Tips & Tricks

  • To achieve the perfect caramel filling consistency, heat the caramel sauce slightly before spreading it on the waffles.
  • If you don't have a stroopwafel iron, you can use a regular waffle iron and flatten the waffles with a heavy object while they are still warm.
  • Stroopwafels can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week. To maintain their freshness, place a slice of bread in the container to absorb excess moisture.
