Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, coriander, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. 2.
Take a handful of the mixture and shape it into a sausage-like form, approximately 10cm (4 inches) long and 2.5cm (1 inch) in diameter. Repeat with the remaining mixture.
  3. 3.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 180°C (350°F).
  4. 4.
Carefully place the shaped Frikandels into the hot oil and fry them for about 6-8 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  5. 5.
Once cooked, remove the Frikandels from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. 6.
Serve the Homemade Dutch Frikandels hot with your favorite dipping sauces or in a soft bun with toppings like mayonnaise, ketchup, and chopped onions.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Breadcrumbs — If you prefer a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or substitute with crushed pork rinds for a low-carb alternative.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a spicier kick, increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add a pinch of chili flakes to the meat mixture.
  • To achieve a crispy exterior, make sure the oil is hot enough before frying the Frikandels.
  • Serve with a side of Dutch fries and mayonnaise for a complete Dutch street food experience.
  • If you don't have a deep fryer, you can also shallow fry the Frikandels in a pan with enough oil to cover the bottom.
