Ingredients

While the original Japanese Gyoza is typically pan-fried and filled with a mixture of pork, cabbage, and garlic, our Dutch-style Gyoza incorporates Dutch ingredients and flavors. We have replaced the pork with ground beef and added a touch of nutmeg and Gouda cheese to enhance the Dutch essence. The cooking method has also been adapted to include baking for a crispy finish. We alse have the original recipe for Gyoza, so you can check it out.

Preparation

  1. 1.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. 2.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped cabbage, grated Gouda cheese, minced garlic, ground nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. 3.
Take a gyoza wrapper and place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water and fold it in half, creating a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal.
  4. 4.
Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  5. 5.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the gyoza to the skillet, flat side down, and cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.
  6. 6.
Pour the water into the skillet, cover with a lid, and transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the gyoza are cooked through and crispy.
  7. 7.
Remove from the oven and serve hot.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ground beef — Ensure the ground beef is lean to avoid excessive grease in the filling.
  • Gouda cheese — Use a mild Gouda cheese for a subtle flavor that complements the beef.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a crispier texture, brush the gyoza with melted butter before baking.
  • Serve with a side of Dutch mustard for an extra tangy kick.
  • Experiment with different fillings such as sautéed mushrooms or grated carrots for added variety.
  • If you prefer a spicier flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the filling mixture.
  • Freeze any leftover uncooked gyoza for a quick and convenient meal option.
