Treat your ingredients with care...
- Potatoes — Make sure to boil the potatoes until they are fork-tender for the smoothest mashed texture.
- Herring — Ensure that the herring fillets are deboned and the skin is removed before marinating and cooking.
Tips & Tricks
- For an extra burst of flavor, add a splash of white wine to the marinade for the herring.
- If you prefer a creamier texture, you can add a small amount of butter or cream to the mashed potatoes.
- Serve the dish with a side of pickled onions or a fresh green salad for added freshness and crunch.
- If herring is not available, you can substitute it with another oily fish such as mackerel or sardines.
- To make the dish more visually appealing, garnish with a sprinkle of paprika or smoked sea salt.
Serving advice
Serve the Tatties and Herring as a main course accompanied by a side of pickled onions or a fresh green salad. This dish pairs well with a glass of crisp white wine or a light Scottish ale.
