Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the warm milk, eggs, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  2. 2.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  3. 3.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. 4.
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll out one portion into a rectangle shape, about 1cm (½ inch) thick, and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  5. 5.
In a bowl, mix together the diced ham, grated cheese, parsley, and oregano. Spread the mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  6. 6.
Roll out the second portion of dough into a rectangle shape, similar in size to the first one. Place it on top of the filling, pressing the edges to seal.
  7. 7.
Using a sharp knife, make diagonal cuts on the top layer of dough, creating a lattice pattern. Brush the surface with the beaten egg yolk.
  8. 8.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. 9.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ham — Use cooked ham that is not too salty to balance the flavors of the bread. If desired, you can substitute it with cooked turkey or chicken.
