Treat your ingredients with care...
- Lime and Orange Zest — Make sure to wash the lime and orange thoroughly before zesting to remove any wax or residue. Use a microplane or fine grater to obtain the zest, avoiding the bitter white pith.
- Dark Chocolate — Choose a high-quality dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content for the best flavor and texture.
- Toasted Coconut Flakes — To toast the coconut flakes, spread them evenly on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep a close eye on them as they can burn quickly.
Tips & Tricks
- For a more pronounced citrus flavor, you can add a squeeze of lime or orange juice to the custard mixture before cooking.
- If you prefer a sweeter dessert, you can increase the amount of sugar in the custard to your taste.
- To save time, you can prepare the custard a day in advance and assemble the dessert just before serving.
- Experiment with different toppings such as fresh berries or a sprinkle of cinnamon for added flavor variations.
- Serve the Herrencreme Veracruz Style in transparent glasses to showcase the beautiful layers of custard and chocolate ganache.
