Preparation
-
1.In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
-
2.Add the warm milk and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
-
3.Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
-
4.Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
5.Meanwhile, prepare the filling by combining the sweet red bean paste, crushed star anise, and cinnamon stick in a saucepan. Cook over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it cool.
-
6.Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into equal-sized portions and shape each portion into a ball.
-
7.Flatten each dough ball with your palm and place a spoonful of the cooled red bean paste filling in the center. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling.
-
8.Place the filled dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
-
9.Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
-
10.Brush the risen dough balls with beaten egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
-
11.Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the Haipai Anpan turns golden brown.
-
12.Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
