Preparation

  1. 1.
Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. 2.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, dried thyme, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. 3.
Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. 4.
Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. 5.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
  6. 6.
Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch (1.3cm). Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
  7. 7.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.
  8. 8.
While the biscuits are still warm, split them in half and place a slice of ham inside each biscuit.
  9. 9.
    Serve warm and enjoy!

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Buttermilk — If you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 3/4 cup of milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the biscuit dough.
  • To make the biscuits even more tender, handle the dough as little as possible.
  • If you prefer a sweeter version, brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter and sprinkle them with a touch of sugar before baking.
  • Experiment with different types of ham, such as smoked or honey-glazed, to add variety to your biscuits.
  • These biscuits can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
