Preparation
-
1.In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
-
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
-
3.Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
4.In the meantime, prepare the meat filling. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and pork over medium heat until browned. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
-
5.Stir in the paprika, salt, black pepper, oregano, and thyme. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and let it cool.
-
6.Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
-
7.Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll out each portion into an oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
-
8.Transfer one piece of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread the meat filling evenly over the dough, leaving a border around the edges.
-
9.Place the second piece of dough on top of the filling and seal the edges by crimping them together.
-
10.Brush the beaten egg over the top of the pie.
-
11.Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
-
12.Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground beef and pork — Make sure to use lean ground meat for a healthier option. If desired, you can substitute with ground chicken or turkey for a lighter version.
- Paprika — Opt for a high-quality Hungarian paprika for an authentic and robust flavor.
- Active dry yeast — Ensure that the yeast is fresh and active to achieve a good rise in the dough.
- All-purpose flour — If you prefer a whole wheat version, you can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for added nutritional value.
- Onions — Use yellow or white onions for a milder flavor.
