Preparation
-
1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
-
2.In a small saucepan, heat the milk and water until warm (around 110°F/43°C).
-
3.Pour the warm milk mixture, melted butter, and egg into the dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough forms.
-
4.Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
-
5.Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
6.Meanwhile, prepare the filling by combining the brown sugar, softened butter, and ground cinnamon in a small bowl. Mix until well combined.
-
7.Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a 12x9-inch rectangle.
-
8.Spread the filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired.
-
9.Starting from the long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal.
-
10.Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
-
11.Cover the dish with a kitchen towel and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes.
-
12.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
13.In a small saucepan, melt the butter for the caramel glaze over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, heavy cream, honey, and vanilla extract. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
-
14.Pour the caramel glaze over the risen rolls, making sure to coat them evenly.
-
15.Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the caramel is bubbling.
-
16.Remove from the oven and let the sticky buns cool in the pan for a few minutes before serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Butter — Make sure the butter is softened for the filling and melted for the caramel glaze.
- Brown sugar — Pack the brown sugar firmly when measuring for accurate sweetness.
- Instant yeast — If using active dry yeast instead, proof it in warm water before adding it to the dough.
Tips & Tricks
- For a twist, add raisins or chopped apples to the filling.
- To make the rolls ahead of time, prepare them until step 11, then cover and refrigerate overnight. Let them come to room temperature before baking.
- If you prefer a less sweet glaze, reduce the amount of brown sugar in the caramel glaze.
- Warm the honey slightly before adding it to the caramel glaze for easier mixing.
- Serve the sticky buns warm for the best experience.
