Preparation
-
1.In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
-
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and dried Italian herbs. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
-
3.Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
-
4.Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
5.Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Punch down the dough and transfer it to a greased baking sheet.
-
6.Flatten the dough into a rectangular shape and sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the surface.
-
7.Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other, creating a log shape. Pinch the ends to seal.
-
8.Place the dough seam-side down on the baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
-
9.Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
10.Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Cheese — Use a blend of your favorite cheeses to add depth of flavor. Experiment with different combinations such as mozzarella, cheddar, or even Parmesan for a sharper taste.
Tips & Tricks
- For a more pronounced herb flavor, you can add fresh herbs instead of dried ones. Simply chop them finely and incorporate them into the dough during the mixing process.
- To achieve a crispier crust, you can brush the bread with olive oil before baking.
- Feel free to customize the cheese blend according to your preference. Add a sprinkle of Parmesan on top for an extra cheesy crust.
