Preparation

1.Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides. Remove the beef from the pot and set aside.

2.In the same pot, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Sauté the garlic, onions, carrots, and ginger until they are softened and fragrant.

3.Return the beef to the pot and add the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, star anise, cinnamon stick, dried red chilies, and five-spice powder. Season with salt and pepper.

4.Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for 2-3 hours, or until the beef is tender.

5.Remove the star anise, cinnamon stick, and dried red chilies from the pot. Adjust the seasoning if needed.

6.Serve the Taiwanese-style Beef Bourguignon over steamed rice or noodles. Garnish with fresh cilantro.
