Ingredients
In this Hubei-style adaptation, we replace the traditional German sausage with marinated pork belly, which is a popular ingredient in Hubei cuisine. The sauce is enhanced with Hubei's unique blend of spices, including Sichuan peppercorns and dried chili peppers, to give it a distinctively spicy and aromatic flavor. Additionally, we incorporate fresh herbs and vegetables commonly used in Hubei cuisine to add a refreshing element to the dish. We alse have the original recipe for Hausfreunde, so you can check it out.

- Pork belly — For a more tender and flavorful result, marinate the pork belly slices in a mixture of soy sauce, ginger, and garlic for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
- Sichuan peppercorns — Toast the Sichuan peppercorns in a dry pan over low heat for a minute or two to enhance their fragrance before crushing them.
Tips & Tricks
- If you prefer a spicier dish, increase the amount of dried chili flakes according to your taste.
- Feel free to add other vegetables such as bell peppers or mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the pork belly with tofu or tempeh and use vegetable broth instead of meat-based sauces.
- Adjust the seasoning according to your preference by adding more soy sauce or vinegar if desired.
