Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground pork — Make sure to use lean ground pork for a healthier option. If you prefer a more flavorful filling, you can use a combination of ground pork and ground beef.
- Spring roll wrappers — Keep the wrappers covered with a damp cloth while assembling the lumpia to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle.
Tips & Tricks
- For extra crispiness, you can double-fry the spring rolls. After the initial frying, let them cool for a few minutes, then fry them again until they turn golden brown.
- Serve Lumpiang Shanghai with a sweet chili sauce or a vinegar dipping sauce for a burst of tangy flavor.
- If you prefer a spicier version, add a small amount of minced chili peppers to the filling mixture.
- To save time, you can prepare the filling in advance and refrigerate it until ready to use.
- If you're vegetarian, you can substitute the ground pork with crumbled tofu or textured vegetable protein for a plant-based alternative.
Serving advice
Serve Lumpiang Shanghai as an appetizer or as part of a larger Filipino feast. Arrange the spring rolls on a platter and garnish with fresh cilantro or green onions for an added touch of freshness. Provide a variety of dipping sauces to complement the flavors of the dish.
Presentation advice
Arrange the Lumpiang Shanghai on a serving platter in a neat and inviting manner. Consider adding a decorative element, such as a sprig of fresh herbs or a slice of lime, to enhance the visual appeal of the dish.
