Treat your ingredients with care...
- Mozzarella cheese — Use fresh mozzarella cheese for the best results. If you can't find fresh mozzarella, you can substitute with low-moisture mozzarella, but the texture may be slightly different.
- Tomato passata — Tomato passata is a smooth tomato puree. If you can't find it, you can blend canned tomatoes until smooth.
- Fresh basil leaves — For the best flavor, use fresh basil leaves. If unavailable, you can substitute with dried basil, but reduce the quantity to 1 teaspoon.
Tips & Tricks
- To make the dish even more flavorful, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the tomato basil sauce for a hint of spiciness.
- Serve the Mozzarella Tortino with a side of fresh arugula salad dressed with lemon vinaigrette to balance the richness of the cheese.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can bake the breaded mozzarella slices instead of frying them. Simply place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 200°C (400°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Serving advice
Serve the Mozzarella Tortino hot, straight from the oven. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for an extra touch of freshness. This dish pairs well with a glass of Italian red wine.
Presentation advice
Present the Mozzarella Tortino on individual plates, allowing the layers of melted cheese and tomato sauce to be visible. Drizzle a little extra tomato basil sauce on top for an appetizing presentation.
