Ingredients

In this adaptation, we have taken the traditional Dutch Uitsmijter spek en kaas and given it a Northern European twist. While the original dish uses Dutch ingredients and flavors, we have incorporated ingredients commonly found in Northern European cuisine. This includes using a hearty bread, such as rye or sourdough, and adding a touch of fresh herbs like dill or chives for added flavor. We alse have the original recipe for Uitsmijter spek en kaas, so you can check it out.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Bacon — For a healthier option, you can use turkey bacon or lean ham instead of traditional bacon.
  • Cheese — Experiment with different types of cheese, such as cheddar or Emmental, to add variety to the dish.
  • Fresh herbs — Feel free to use other herbs like parsley or basil if you prefer different flavors.
  • Bread — Choose a hearty bread with a dense texture to hold up well to the toppings.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a twist, add sliced avocado or tomato to the sandwich.
  • Experiment with different spices like paprika or garlic powder to season the eggs.
  • If you prefer a firmer yolk, cook the eggs over-easy instead of sunny-side up.
  • Serve with a side of pickles or sauerkraut for a tangy contrast.
  • To make it a complete meal, serve with a side of mixed greens or a fresh fruit salad.
