Ingredients

In this vegan adaptation of the classic American Apple Pie, we have made a few changes to ensure it aligns with a plant-based diet. The traditional butter in the crust has been replaced with vegan margarine, and the filling no longer contains any eggs. Despite these modifications, the pie remains just as delicious and satisfying as the original. We alse have the original recipe for Apple Pie, so you can check it out.

Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold vegan margarine and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. 2.
Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape them into discs, and wrap each in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. 3.
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
  4. 4.
In a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  5. 5.
Roll out one disc of dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Transfer the rolled-out dough to the pie dish and gently press it into the bottom and sides.
  6. 6.
Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly.
  7. 7.
Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
  8. 8.
Brush the top crust with plant-based milk and sprinkle with sugar.
  9. 9.
Make a few slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  10. 10.
Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  11. 11.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Apples — Choose firm and tart varieties such as Granny Smith or Braeburn for the best flavor and texture in the pie.
  • Vegan margarine — Look for a brand that is specifically labeled as vegan to ensure it does not contain any dairy or animal-derived ingredients.
  • Plant-based milk — Use any unsweetened plant-based milk of your choice, such as almond milk or oat milk, for brushing the crust.

Tips & Tricks

  • To prevent the crust from becoming too soggy, sprinkle a tablespoon of breadcrumbs or ground almonds on the bottom of the pie crust before adding the apple filling.
  • For an extra touch of flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of cardamom to the apple filling.
  • Serve the pie warm with a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream for a truly indulgent dessert.

Serving advice

Serve the Vegan Apple Pie warm or at room temperature. It pairs perfectly with a dollop of vegan whipped cream or a scoop of dairy-free ice cream.

Presentation advice

For an elegant presentation, dust the top of the pie with a sprinkle of powdered sugar just before serving. You can also garnish each slice with a sprig of fresh mint or a drizzle of vegan caramel sauce.
