Preparation
-
1.In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
-
2.In a separate bowl, prepare the dough by combining the flour and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingertips to rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
-
3.Gradually add the water to the flour mixture, mixing with a fork until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough lightly until it becomes smooth and elastic.
-
4.Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a thin circle.
-
5.Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each dough circle and fold the dough over to enclose the filling. Press the edges firmly to seal the Boxboles.
-
6.Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 180°C (350°F). Fry the Boxboles in batches until they turn golden brown and crispy.
-
7.Remove the Boxboles from the oil and drain them on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
-
8.Serve the Surinamese Boxboles hot and enjoy their delicious flavors.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground beef — Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option. Make sure to cook the meatballs thoroughly to ensure they are safe to consume.
- Cumin — Toasting the cumin seeds before grinding them will enhance their flavor.
- All-purpose flour — Sift the flour before using it to ensure a smoother dough.
Tips & Tricks
- For a spicier kick, add a finely chopped chili pepper to the meat mixture.
- Serve the Boxboles with a tangy tamarind chutney for an extra burst of flavor.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can bake the Boxboles in the oven instead of frying them.
- Experiment with different ground meats such as chicken or lamb for a variation in taste.
- Make a larger batch of Boxboles and freeze them for later use. Just thaw and fry whenever you crave a quick and delicious snack.
