Preparation

  1. 1.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside.
  2. 2.
In the same pot, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
  3. 3.
Add the ground peanuts, cumin, coriander, paprika, and chili powder (if using) to the pot. Stir well to combine the spices with the peanuts and onions.
  4. 4.
Return the chicken to the pot and add the diced tomatoes and bell pepper. Pour in the chicken broth and water. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. 5.
Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the chicken is tender and the flavors have melded together.
  6. 6.
Serve the Dovi hot, garnished with fresh cilantro. It pairs well with sadza or rice.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ground peanuts — Make sure to use unsalted ground peanuts for the best flavor. If you can't find ground peanuts, you can grind roasted peanuts in a food processor until they reach a fine consistency.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a spicier version, increase the amount of chili powder or add a chopped chili pepper.
  • Adjust the consistency of the stew by adding more water or broth if desired.
  • To enhance the nutty flavor, lightly toast the ground peanuts before adding them to the stew.
  • Experiment with different vegetables such as sweet potatoes or butternut squash for added variety.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated the next day for an even more flavorful meal.

Serving advice

Serve the Dovi in bowls, accompanied by a portion of sadza or rice. Garnish with fresh cilantro for a pop of color and added freshness.

Presentation advice

To make the dish visually appealing, arrange the chicken pieces on top of the stew and sprinkle some extra ground peanuts and cilantro leaves as a finishing touch.
