Ingredients
While the original Japanese gyoza is typically pan-fried and filled with a mixture of ground pork, cabbage, and garlic, our Soulful Gyoza incorporates elements of soul food. We enhance the filling with a combination of seasoned ground beef, collard greens, and onions, giving it a Southern twist. Additionally, we serve the gyoza with a tangy and spicy dipping sauce inspired by Southern flavors. We alse have the original recipe for Gyoza, so you can check it out.

Preparation
-
1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, collard greens, onion, garlic, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
-
2.Take a gyoza wrapper and place a spoonful of the filling in the center. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water and fold it in half, creating a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges to seal the gyoza. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
-
3.Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the gyoza in the skillet, flat side down, and cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.
-
4.Pour 1/4 cup (60ml) of water into the skillet and cover with a lid. Steam the gyoza for 5-6 minutes until the filling is cooked through and the wrappers are tender.
-
5.Remove the lid and continue cooking for another 1-2 minutes to crisp up the bottoms of the gyoza.
-
6.Serve the Soulful Gyoza hot with a side of tangy and spicy dipping sauce.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground beef — Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option.
- Collard greens — Make sure to remove the tough stems before chopping.
- Gyoza wrappers — Keep the wrappers covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out while assembling the gyoza.
Tips & Tricks
- For a crispier texture, you can pan-fry the gyoza for a few extra minutes after steaming.
- Experiment with different dipping sauces like a blend of soy sauce, vinegar, and hot sauce for an extra kick.
- Serve the Soulful Gyoza as an appetizer or alongside a bowl of comforting Southern-style grits.
