Preparation
-
1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the masa harina, warm water, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms.
-
2.Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.
-
3.Place a ball of dough between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Use a tortilla press or a heavy flat-bottomed object to flatten the dough into a thin round tortilla.
-
4.Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
-
5.Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook each tortilla for about 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly browned. Repeat with the remaining dough.
-
6.Transfer the cooked tortillas to a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until crispy.
-
7.Once the tortillas are crispy, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly.
-
8.Fill each tortilla with your desired fillings, such as shredded chicken or beef, refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, avocado, queso fresco, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime.
-
9.Serve the Salbutes immediately and enjoy!
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Masa harina — Ensure that the masa harina is fresh and not expired for the best results in making the tortillas.
Tips & Tricks
- If you don't have a tortilla press, you can use a heavy skillet or a rolling pin to flatten the dough.
- Experiment with different fillings to create your own unique Salbute combinations.
- For a spicier version, add some sliced jalapenos or hot sauce to the fillings.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can bake the tortillas without frying them in a skillet.
Serving advice
Serve the Salbutes as a main course with a side of Mexican rice and beans, or as an appetizer for a festive gathering. Garnish with extra cilantro and lime wedges for added freshness.
