Preparation
-
1.In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, Palatine spice blend, salt, black pepper, breadcrumbs, and beaten egg. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
-
2.Shape the mixture into oval-shaped patties, approximately 1/2 inch thick.
-
3.Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
-
4.In the same skillet, add the sliced Palatine mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and turn golden brown.
-
5.Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir well to coat. Cook for an additional minute.
-
6.Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
-
7.Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
-
8.Return the beef patties to the skillet, spooning the mushroom gravy over them. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat the patties through.
-
9.Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Palatine spice blend — If you can't find a pre-made Palatine spice blend, you can make your own by combining equal parts of paprika, marjoram, thyme, and nutmeg.
- Palatine mushrooms — Look for fresh Palatine mushrooms at your local farmer's market or specialty grocery store. If unavailable, you can substitute with cremini or button mushrooms.
Tips & Tricks
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the mushroom gravy.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the simmering gravy until thickened.
- Serve the beef patties and mushroom gravy over a bed of buttered noodles or mashed potatoes for a complete Palatine-style meal.
- To enhance the umami taste, you can add a small amount of soy sauce or balsamic vinegar to the mushroom gravy.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and enjoyed the next day. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave, adding a splash of beef broth to prevent drying.
