Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the warm water and olive oil, mixing until a smooth dough forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. 2.
In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the onion, bell pepper, garlic, thyme, scotch bonnet pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the flavors are well combined. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. 3.
Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a thin circle. Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
  4. 4.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (180°C). Fry the Verrettas in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  5. 5.
Serve the Haitian Verrettas hot and enjoy the delicious fusion of Italian and Haitian flavors.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ground beef — Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option. You can also substitute it with ground chicken or turkey for a lighter alternative.
  • Scotch bonnet pepper — Adjust the amount of pepper according to your spice preference. For a milder flavor, remove the seeds before mincing.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of flavor, add a squeeze of lime juice to the meat filling before sealing the Verrettas.
  • Serve the Verrettas with pikliz, a traditional Haitian spicy cabbage slaw, for a refreshing and tangy accompaniment.
  • If you prefer a healthier option, you can bake the Verrettas in the oven instead of frying them. Brush them with olive oil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serving advice

Serve the Haitian Verrettas as a main course accompanied by pikliz and a side of rice and beans. They can also be enjoyed as a delicious appetizer or snack.
