Ingredients
In this New Zealand adaptation of Wentelteefjes, we incorporate the use of local ingredients and flavors to give it a Kiwi twist. Instead of using traditional Dutch bread, we recommend using thick slices of New Zealand-style white bread. The toppings are also modified to include fresh kiwifruit and berries, which add a refreshing and tangy element to the dish. Additionally, New Zealand honey can be used as a sweetener, enhancing the natural flavors of the French toast. We alse have the original recipe for Wentelteefjes, so you can check it out.

Treat your ingredients with care...
- Bread — Use thick slices of New Zealand-style white bread to achieve a fluffy and custardy texture in the French toast.
- Kiwifruit — Choose ripe kiwifruit for the best flavor and texture. Peel and slice them just before serving to maintain their freshness.
- Berries — Opt for a mix of fresh berries such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries to add a burst of color and natural sweetness to the dish.
- New Zealand honey — Use locally sourced honey to enhance the flavors of the French toast. Drizzle it over the top or serve it on the side for dipping.
Tips & Tricks
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the egg mixture.
- If you prefer a sweeter French toast, you can add a tablespoon of sugar to the egg mixture.
- To keep the French toast warm while cooking in batches, place the cooked slices on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 200°F (95°C).
- Experiment with different toppings such as sliced bananas, toasted coconut flakes, or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
- Serve the French toast with a side of crispy bacon or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a more indulgent treat.
