Ingredients

In this Pashtun-style adaptation, the traditional American Apple Butter is transformed into a tangy and spiced chutney. The addition of Pashtun spices like cumin, coriander, and ginger gives it a distinct flavor profile. The texture is also slightly different, with small chunks of tender apple adding a delightful bite. We alse have the original recipe for Apple Butter, so you can check it out.

Remove from heat and let the chutney cool completely.
  4. 4.
Transfer the chutney to sterilized jars and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Apples — Choose firm and slightly tart apples like Granny Smith or Golden Delicious for the best flavor and texture.
  • Apple cider vinegar — Opt for unfiltered apple cider vinegar to enhance the tanginess of the chutney.
  • Brown sugar — If you prefer a less sweet chutney, reduce the amount of brown sugar according to your taste preference.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a spicier chutney, increase the amount of chili flakes or add a finely chopped green chili.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar according to your taste preference.
  • Serve the chutney alongside grilled meats, kebabs, or as a condiment for sandwiches and wraps.
  • The chutney tastes even better after a few days as the flavors continue to develop.
  • Make a larger batch and store it in sterilized jars for up to 2 months in the refrigerator.

Serving advice

Serve the Pashtun-style Spiced Apple Chutney as a condiment alongside traditional Pashtun dishes like Kabuli Pulao, Chapli Kebabs, or Mantu (dumplings). It also pairs well with grilled meats, sandwiches, and wraps.

Presentation advice

Transfer the chutney to a decorative jar or bowl to showcase its vibrant golden color. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cumin or a few fresh cilantro leaves for an added touch of freshness.
