Ingredients
In this Montenegrin adaptation of Supplì, we incorporate traditional Montenegrin flavors and ingredients to create a unique twist. While the Italian version typically uses risotto rice, we substitute it with locally grown Montenegrin rice for an authentic touch. Additionally, we enhance the filling by incorporating a blend of Montenegrin spices and herbs, such as paprika and wild thyme, to infuse the dish with the flavors of the region. We alse have the original recipe for Supplì, so you can check it out.

Preparation
-
1.In a large saucepan, bring the broth to a boil. Add the Montenegrin rice and cook until tender. Drain any excess liquid and set aside.
-
2.In a separate pan, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
-
3.Stir in the paprika, dried wild thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
-
4.In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice and the ground beef mixture. Mix well to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed.
-
5.Take a small portion of the rice mixture and flatten it in the palm of your hand. Place a cube of mozzarella cheese in the center and shape the rice mixture into a ball, ensuring the cheese is completely enclosed.
-
6.Dip each rice ball into the beaten eggs, then roll it in breadcrumbs until fully coated.
-
7.Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (180°C). Fry the rice balls in batches until golden brown and crispy, approximately 3-4 minutes per batch.
-
8.Remove the Supplì from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
-
9.Serve the Montenegrin-style Supplì hot and enjoy the gooey, cheesy goodness!
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Montenegrin rice — Make sure to cook the rice until tender but not mushy to achieve the perfect texture for the Supplì.
- Ground beef — Opt for lean ground beef to reduce the fat content of the dish.
- Mozzarella cheese — Use fresh mozzarella for the best melting and gooey texture.
Tips & Tricks
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with cooked lentils or mushrooms.
- Experiment with different types of cheese, such as smoked cheese or feta, for a unique twist on the traditional Supplì.
- To make the Supplì extra crispy, refrigerate them for 30 minutes before frying.
- Serve the Supplì with a side of marinara sauce or aioli for dipping.
- Leftover Supplì can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes to regain their crispiness.
Serving advice
Serve the Montenegrin-style Supplì as an appetizer or snack. Arrange them on a platter and garnish with fresh herbs, such as parsley or basil, for an added touch of freshness.
