Ingredients

In this Nordic adaptation, the traditional Mexican tortas are transformed into open-faced sandwiches. The original tortas are typically made with a soft bread roll and filled with various ingredients such as meat, cheese, and vegetables. The Nordic version replaces the soft bread roll with a slice of hearty rye bread, which adds a distinct flavor and texture. The toppings are also modified to include Nordic ingredients like smoked salmon, dill-infused yogurt spread, and pickled cucumbers, giving the dish a unique Nordic twist. We alse have the original recipe for Tortas, so you can check it out.

  • Smoked salmon — Ensure the salmon is thinly sliced for easy biting and even distribution across the sandwich.
  • Rye bread — Toast the bread until lightly crispy to add a pleasant crunch to the sandwich.
  • Yogurt — Use plain yogurt for the dill-infused spread, and make sure it is well mixed with the chopped dill for a consistent flavor.

Tips & Tricks

  • For a vegetarian version, replace the smoked salmon with thinly sliced roasted beets or marinated tofu.
  • Experiment with different types of rye bread, such as dark rye or sourdough rye, to add more depth of flavor.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon juice over the toppings for an extra burst of freshness.
  • Customize the toppings by adding thinly sliced red onions or capers for additional flavor.
  • Serve the open-faced sandwiches on a wooden board or platter for an authentic Nordic presentation.
