Nem nướng
Nem nướng is a popular street food in Vietnam that is often served as an appetizer or snack. The pork sausage is made with ground pork, garlic, sugar, fish sauce, and other seasonings. The sausage is then grilled until it is crispy and golden brown. The rice paper is soaked in water until it is soft and pliable, and then filled with the grilled sausage, lettuce, mint, and other herbs. The dish is typically served with a dipping sauce made with fish sauce, sugar, lime juice, garlic, and chili peppers.
Origins and history
Nem nướng is a traditional Vietnamese dish that has been enjoyed for generations. It is believed to have originated in the central region of Vietnam, where it was served as a snack for farmers and workers in the fields. Today, it is a popular street food throughout Vietnam and is enjoyed by people of all ages.
Dietary considerations
Nem nướng is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans as it contains pork. It is also not suitable for those with a gluten intolerance as the rice paper contains gluten.
Variations
There are many variations of nem nướng, including nem nướng cuốn (grilled pork sausage wrapped in rice paper with herbs and vegetables), nem nướng chả giò (grilled pork sausage wrapped in rice paper and deep-fried), and nem nướng xiên (grilled pork sausage on a skewer).
Presentation and garnishing
Nem nướng is typically served on a platter with the grilled sausage arranged in a circular pattern. The herbs and vegetables are arranged around the sausage, and the dipping sauce is served in a small bowl in the center of the platter. The dish is garnished with chopped peanuts and sliced chili peppers.
Tips & Tricks
To make the sausage easier to handle, wet your hands with water before shaping the sausage mixture into patties. This will prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands. Also, be sure to soak the rice paper in warm water for no more than 10 seconds, or it will become too soft and difficult to handle.
Side-dishes
Nem nướng is often served with a variety of side dishes, including pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and rice noodles.
Drink pairings
Nem nướng pairs well with a variety of drinks, including beer, iced tea, and lemonade.
