Preparation
-
1.Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
-
2.In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and flour. Mix well until the apples are evenly coated.
-
3.Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place the rolled pastry into the dish, pressing it gently against the sides.
-
4.Pour the apple mixture into the pastry-lined dish, spreading it evenly.
-
5.Roll out the remaining puff pastry and cut it into thin strips. Create a lattice pattern on top of the apple filling by weaving the strips over and under each other.
-
6.Brush the lattice crust with the beaten egg wash.
-
7.Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
-
8.Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Apples — Choose firm and slightly tart apples such as Granny Smith or Braeburn for the best flavor and texture.
- Puff pastry — If you prefer a homemade crust, you can make a traditional Bosnian pastry dough called "tijesto za pitu" instead of using store-bought puff pastry.
- Cardamom — Use freshly ground cardamom for the most aromatic flavor.
- Lemon juice — The lemon juice helps prevent the apples from browning and adds a subtle tang to the filling.
- Powdered sugar — Dust the pie with powdered sugar just before serving to add a touch of sweetness and a beautiful finishing touch.
Tips & Tricks
- For a more rustic look, you can fold the edges of the pastry over the filling instead of using a lattice crust.
- Serve the Bosnian Apple Pie warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgence.
- If you prefer a sweeter filling, you can increase the amount of sugar or add a drizzle of honey to the apple mixture.
- Experiment with different apple varieties to find your favorite flavor combination.
- Leftover pie can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Serving advice
Serve the Bosnian Apple Pie warm or at room temperature. Cut it into slices and serve on dessert plates. Optionally, you can garnish each slice with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream.
Presentation advice
To enhance the presentation, you can serve the Bosnian Apple Pie on a decorative dessert plate. Consider adding a sprig of fresh mint or a dusting of cinnamon on top of the powdered sugar for an elegant touch.
