Ingredients
While the original Czech dish Karlovarské Trojhránky features a filling made with ingredients like ham, cheese, and pickles, the Mangalorean Catholic adaptation replaces these ingredients with a spiced potato filling. The spices used in the Mangalorean version, such as cumin, turmeric, and garam masala, give the sandwiches a distinct Indian flavor profile. Additionally, the bread used in the Mangalorean version is typically a soft white bread, which is then toasted to achieve a crispy texture. Treat your ingredients with care...
- Potatoes — Make sure to boil the potatoes until they are soft and easily mashable. This will ensure a smooth and creamy filling.
- Cumin seeds — Toasting the cumin seeds before adding them to the filling will enhance their flavor.
- Bread — Use fresh, soft white bread for the best results. Stale or hard bread may not toast evenly.
Tips & Tricks
- For an extra kick of flavor, you can add a pinch of red chili powder or finely chopped fresh coriander leaves to the potato filling.
- Serve the sandwiches with a side of tangy tamarind chutney or spicy tomato ketchup for a delicious accompaniment.
- If you prefer a healthier option, you can lightly toast the sandwiches in a sandwich press instead of pan-frying them.
