Ingredients

In the original Greek dish, Marides tiganites, small fish are typically used whole and fried. However, in this Crimean Tatar adaptation, the fish is filleted and marinated in a blend of Crimean Tatar spices to infuse it with unique flavors. The batter used for frying is also adjusted to incorporate ingredients commonly found in Crimean Tatar cuisine. We alse have the original recipe for Marides tiganites, so you can check it out.

Preparation

  1. 1.
Cut the fish fillets into bite-sized pieces and place them in a bowl.
  2. 2.
In a small bowl, combine the Crimean Tatar spice blend and salt. Sprinkle the mixture over the fish and gently toss to coat evenly. Let it marinate for 30 minutes.
  3. 3.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the sparkling water while whisking until a smooth batter forms.
  4. 4.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium heat.
  5. 5.
Dip each marinated fish piece into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, and carefully place it into the hot oil.
  6. 6.
Fry the fritters in batches for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  7. 7.
Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. 8.
Serve the Crimean Tatar fish fritters hot with lemon wedges on the side.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of flavor, add a pinch of chili powder to the Crimean Tatar spice blend.
  • Serve the fritters with a yogurt-based dipping sauce flavored with dill and garlic for a refreshing twist.
  • If you prefer a lighter version, you can bake the fritters in the oven instead of frying them. Simply place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
