Ingredients

In this Omani-inspired version, we have incorporated traditional Omani spices and flavors into the pupusa recipe. The filling includes Omani spices such as turmeric, cumin, and cardamom, which add a unique twist to the traditional Salvadoran pupusa. Additionally, the flatbread is made with a combination of cornmeal and wheat flour, giving it a slightly different texture compared to the original pupusa. Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, and salt. Gradually add warm water and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. 2.
In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until translucent.
  3. 3.
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Stir in the turmeric, cumin, cardamom, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. 4.
Divide the dough into small balls, approximately 2 inches in diameter. Flatten each ball into a disc shape.
  5. 5.
Place a spoonful of the prepared beef filling in the center of each disc. Fold the edges of the disc over the filling, sealing it completely.
  6. 6.
Heat a lightly oiled skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the stuffed flatbreads for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. 7.
Serve the Omani-inspired stuffed flatbreads hot with tomato chutney on the side.
