Ingredients

In this Omani adaptation of the German Schmierwurst, we incorporate traditional Omani spices and flavors to create a unique fusion dish. The original German sausage is typically made with pork, but we substitute it with beef to cater to the dietary preferences of Omani cuisine. Additionally, we infuse the sausage with a blend of Middle Eastern spices, such as cumin, coriander, and cardamom, to give it an authentic Omani twist. We alse have the original recipe for Schmierwurst, so you can check it out.

Preparation

  1. 1.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. 2.
Shape the mixture into sausage-shaped patties, approximately 10cm (4 inches) long and 2.5cm (1 inch) thick.
  3. 3.
Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through.
  4. 4.
Alternatively, you can grill the sausage patties on a preheated grill for approximately 10-12 minutes, turning them halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  5. 5.
Once cooked, remove the sausage patties from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Ground beef — Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option. Make sure the beef is fresh and of high quality to enhance the flavor of the sausage.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra burst of flavor, you can add a tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley or cilantro to the sausage mixture.
  • If you prefer a spicier sausage, you can add a pinch of chili powder or cayenne pepper to the spice blend.
  • Serve the sausage with traditional Omani flatbread, such as khubz, and a side of tangy Omani tomato chutney for a complete Omani culinary experience.
  • If you don't have ground beef, you can substitute it with ground lamb or a combination of beef and lamb for a different flavor profile.
  • Leftover sausage patties can be refrigerated and enjoyed the next day. They can be reheated in a skillet or grilled for a few minutes until heated through.
