Ingredients
The Tatar-style Savory Tart differs from the original British tart in its choice of ingredients and spices. While the British tart often features ingredients like cheese, vegetables, or fruits, the Tatar-style tart focuses on a savory filling made with ground beef, onions, and aromatic spices. This adaptation brings the unique flavors of Tatar cuisine to the classic tart, creating a fusion dish that is both delicious and culturally rich. Preparation
-
1.Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
-
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt for the tart shell. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingertips to rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
-
3.Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
4.In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent.
-
5.Stir in the cumin powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
-
6.Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a tart pan. Press the dough into the pan, trimming any excess.
-
7.Pour the cooled filling into the tart shell and spread it evenly.
-
8.Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
-
9.Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground beef — Choose lean ground beef for a healthier option. You can also substitute it with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter twist.
- Cumin powder — Toasting the cumin seeds before grinding them will enhance their flavor. Simply heat them in a dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant, then grind them into a powder.
Tips & Tricks
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of chili flakes to the filling.
- Serve the tart with a dollop of sour cream or yogurt for added creaminess.
- Experiment with different herbs and spices to customize the flavor profile of the tart.
- Make mini tarts using a muffin tin for a bite-sized appetizer or party snack.
- Leftover tart can be refrigerated and enjoyed the next day. Simply reheat it in the oven for a few minutes to regain its crispiness.
