Treat your ingredients with care...
- Beef — Choose a tender cut of beef, such as chuck or stewing beef, for the best results. Trim any excess fat before cubing.
- Chinese five-spice powder — This aromatic spice blend typically includes star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds. If you can't find it, you can make your own blend by combining equal parts of these spices.
- Hoisin sauce — Look for a vegetarian or vegan version if you prefer to avoid oyster-based ingredients.
Tips & Tricks
- For an extra kick of heat, add a small amount of chili paste or hot sauce to the stew.
- If you prefer a thicker stew, you can mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a little water and add it to the pot during the last few minutes of cooking.
- Feel free to customize the vegetable selection based on your preferences or seasonal availability.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for future enjoyment.
- The flavors of this stew deepen and develop even more when reheated the next day, making it a great make-ahead dish.
