Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Avocados — Choose ripe avocados that yield to gentle pressure when squeezed. If they are not ripe enough, place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple to speed up the ripening process.
  • Sichuan peppercorns — Toast the peppercorns in a dry pan over medium heat for a few minutes until fragrant. Crush them using a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder.
  • Chili oil — You can adjust the spiciness of the guacamole by adding more or less chili oil according to your preference.
  • Soy sauce — Use a good quality soy sauce for the best flavor. You can also use tamari or coconut aminos as a gluten-free alternative.
  • Garlic — For a milder garlic flavor, you can roast the garlic cloves before mincing them.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of heat, add a pinch of Sichuan chili flakes to the guacamole.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, blend the guacamole ingredients in a food processor instead of mashing them with a fork.
  • Serve the guacamole with Chinese-style crispy wonton chips or prawn crackers for an authentic touch.
  • Customize the guacamole by adding diced cucumber, shredded carrots, or chopped peanuts for added crunch and flavor.
  • To prevent the guacamole from browning, press a layer of plastic wrap directly onto the surface before refrigerating.

Serving advice

Serve the Chinese-style guacamole as a dip alongside your favorite Chinese dishes or as a condiment for steamed buns, dumplings, or stir-fried noodles. It also pairs well with grilled meats or as a topping for rice bowls.

Presentation advice

Garnish the guacamole with a sprinkle of crushed Sichuan peppercorns and a few fresh cilantro leaves for an attractive presentation. Serve it in a shallow bowl or on a platter to showcase the vibrant colors of the dip.
