Preparation
-
1.In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground lamb, chopped onion, minced garlic, paprika, cumin, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
-
2.Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a long, thin log shape.
-
3.Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the meat logs for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are cooked through and nicely browned.
-
4.While the meat is cooking, warm the Bosnian-style flatbreads on the grill or in a toaster oven until they are soft and slightly toasted.
-
5.Once the meat logs are cooked, remove them from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes. Then, slice the meat into thin strips.
-
6.To assemble the Bosnian-style gyros, place a warm flatbread on a plate. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on the flatbread. Top with a portion of the sliced meat, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, and chopped fresh parsley.
-
7.Roll up the flatbread tightly, enclosing the filling. Repeat with the remaining flatbreads and ingredients.
-
8.Serve the Bosnian-style gyros immediately and enjoy!
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Ground beef and lamb — Make sure to use lean ground meat for a healthier option. If desired, you can also mix in some finely chopped fresh herbs like mint or parsley for added flavor.
- Bosnian-style flatbreads (lepinja) — If you can't find Bosnian-style flatbreads, you can substitute them with pita bread or any other flatbread of your choice.
- Tzatziki sauce — You can make your own tzatziki sauce by combining Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, lemon juice, and chopped fresh dill. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
Tips & Tricks
- For a smoky flavor, you can grill the flatbreads for a few seconds on each side before assembling the gyros.
- If you prefer a spicier gyros, increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add some hot sauce to the meat mixture.
- To enhance the flavors, marinate the meat mixture in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight before cooking.
- Serve the Bosnian-style gyros with a side of pickled vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
- Leftover gyros can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat them in a skillet or microwave before serving.
Serving advice
Serve the Bosnian-style gyros hot, straight from the grill. It is best enjoyed immediately after assembly, while the flatbread is still warm and the flavors are at their peak. Pair it with a refreshing beverage like Bosnian yogurt drink (ayran) or a cold Bosnian beer for a truly authentic experience.
Presentation advice
To present the Bosnian-style gyros beautifully, arrange the sliced meat, tomatoes, and onions neatly on the flatbread before rolling it up. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley for a pop of color. Serve the gyros on a wooden board or a plate lined with parchment paper for a rustic touch.
