Preparation
-
1.In a bowl, combine the olive oil, lime juice, minced garlic, cumin, paprika, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to make the marinade.
-
2.Slice the chicken breasts or pork loin into thin strips and place them in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the meat, ensuring it is well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for maximum flavor.
-
3.Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
-
4.Remove the marinated meat from the refrigerator and thread the strips onto skewers. Grill the meat for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and slightly charred.
-
5.While the meat is grilling, warm the pita breads on the grill for a minute on each side.
-
6.Once the meat is cooked, remove it from the skewers and transfer to a serving platter.
-
7.To assemble the Brazilian-style Gyros, place a pita bread on a plate and layer it with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, diced onions, and chopped cilantro. Add a generous amount of the grilled meat on top and drizzle with Brazilian-style hot sauce.
-
8.Fold the pita bread in half and serve immediately.
Treat your ingredients with care...
- Chicken breasts or pork loin — For the most tender and juicy meat, marinate it for at least 1 hour or overnight. This will infuse the flavors and help tenderize the meat.
Tips & Tricks
- If you prefer a spicier Gyros, add some chopped jalapenos or a dash of hot sauce to the marinade.
- Serve the Brazilian-style Gyros with a side of Brazilian black beans and rice for a complete meal.
- Don't forget to warm the pita breads on the grill before assembling the Gyros. It adds a nice touch of smokiness to the dish.
- If you don't have access to a grill, you can also cook the marinated meat in a skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through.
Serving advice
