Ingredients

In this Indo-style adaptation, we infuse the traditional American cheesesteak with Indonesian spices and ingredients. The original beef is marinated in a blend of soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and chili paste, giving it a rich and aromatic flavor. The cheese is replaced with a creamy and tangy peanut sauce, and the traditional hoagie roll is substituted with a soft and fluffy Indonesian-style bread. We alse have the original recipe for Cheesesteak, so you can check it out.

Divide the beef and vegetable mixture evenly among the bread rolls. Serve hot.

Treat your ingredients with care...

  • Beef — For a more tender result, slice the beef against the grain.
  • Indonesian-style bread rolls — If you can't find Indonesian-style bread, you can use soft hoagie rolls as a substitute.
  • Peanut butter — Use natural peanut butter without added sugar for a healthier option.
  • Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) — Look for it in Asian grocery stores or substitute with a mixture of soy sauce and brown sugar.
  • Chili paste — Adjust the amount according to your spice preference.

Tips & Tricks

  • For an extra kick of heat, add sliced bird's eye chili to the beef and vegetable mixture.
  • If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of chili paste or omit it altogether.
  • Serve the cheesesteak with a side of Indonesian-style pickles for a refreshing contrast.
  • Customize your cheesesteak by adding other toppings like sliced tomatoes or lettuce.
  • If you're a cheese lover, you can sprinkle some grated cheddar or mozzarella on top of the beef and melt it under the broiler before assembling the sandwich.
